The senior population is growing rapidly
in our region. The U.S. Census Bureau’s
American Community Survey (2011–2013)
indicates that there are nearly 345,000 people
age 60 and older in King County — 17
percent of our total population. Projections
show that older adults will comprise 25 per-
cent of King County’s residents by 2040.
Currently, one out of five are older adults
of color. More than 9 percent of King Coun-
ty residents 65 and older live in poverty and
poverty disproportionately affects seniors
of color. Only 6 percent of white seniors live
in poverty, while 21 percent of black seniors
and 38 percent of Native American seniors
do.
For nearly 50 years, older adults in King
County and those who care for them have
relied on Sound Generations — previ-
ously Senior Services — for compassionate
guidance and comprehensive services. We
connect older adults and adults with dis-
abilities with resources that fit their needs,
whether they are facing a crisis or simply
striving to lead more active, fulfilling lives.
We also provide them with meals, drive them
to essential services, ease their loneliness and
alleviate caregiver stress. We are committed
to helping people thrive and feel included
and respected.
Our Community Partner Sites — Ballard
NW Senior Center, Central Area Senior Cen-
ter, Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center,
Sno-Valley Senior Center, Southeast Seattle
Senior Center and Senior Center of West
Seattle — welcome all to share a meal, learn
something new, take a fitness class tailored
for older adults, and more.
Sound Generations also tackles larger
societal challenges that affect those served.
By educating staff and volunteers, along with
others in the community, Sound Generations
addresses institutional racism and other
forms of inequity to remove barriers so
that those of color, LGBTQ communities,
immigrants and refugees, and people with
disabilities feel respected and can seamlessly
access critical services.
