An estimated 10,000 people are home-
less each night in King County. Educational
attainment varies widely across the region,
with substantially lower achievement among
students of color. Life expectancy within
King County can range by as much as 13
years from one ZIP code to another. How
can this be, given Greater Seattle’s unprec-
edented growth and prosperity?
As the region’s community foundation,
Seattle Foundation works to create greater
economic, social and racial equity and op-
portunity in all areas of community life.
Philanthropy is the catalyst for such
change. And effective social investment
can reshape people’s lives, bring new life to
distressed neighborhoods and transform the
fundamental systems and policies that create
or restrict equity and opportunity for all.
For more than 1,200 community philan-
thropists and businesses, Seattle Foundation
is a trusted partner for strategic high-impact
giving — making it one of the top 25 com-
munity foundations in the nation. Inspired
by the heart and science of philanthropy,
Seattle Foundation’s knowledgeable team is
uniquely able to provide donors with deep
community insights, effective philanthropic
advising and access to a network of non-
profits to maximize the impact. Partnering
with Seattle Foundation simplifies giving and
strengthens impact, creating lasting change
in the community.
“We are champions of the heart and practi-
tioners of the science of strategic giving,” says
Seattle Foundation President and CEO Tony
Mestres.
It’s that approach that appeals to philan-
thropists. “With Seattle Foundation, we sup-
port groups we care about, changing systems
for good and making a difference together
as a family,” says community philanthropists
Rao and Satya Remala of Medina.
Grant-making is another way Seattle
Foundation invests in the future of Greater
Seattle. Each year, it carefully vets and awards
grants to hundreds of nonprofit organiza-
tions working to make meaningful and
lasting changes. Seattle Foundation is also a
vocal and engaged leader in communicating,
convening and catalyzing collective action
that positively impacts the people in our
communities. Delivered through a systematic
approach of philanthropic planning and ex-
ecution, Seattle Foundation’s expert counsel
and support elevates philanthropy from
transactional check-writing to transforma-
tive social investment.
In addition, as a respected fiduciary of the
community’s charitable funds for more than
70 years, Seattle Foundation provides prin-
cipled oversight and investment of philan-
thropic assets to support donors in achieving
lifetime and legacy goals.
Seattle Foundation is a broker of the great
passions and commitments of incredible
philanthropists who invest their time and
their treasure into our community. Phi-
lanthropy’s impact is often measured in
dollars, and by that standard, last year was a
milestone. In a record-setting 2015, Seattle
Foundation, in partnership with commu-
nity philanthropists, invested nearly $100
million into the region and hit $1 billion in
total investment since the Foundation was
established in 1946.
Seattle Foundation provides value through
powerful civic leadership, judicious stew-
ardship of assets, deep community insight
and effective philanthropic advising. Earlier
this year, Seattle Foundation introduced a
new portfolio of services with value-based
pricing, as well as a new menu of investment
options so philanthropists can now sync
their investing with their giving plan and
timeline.
Seattle Foundation also continues to take
a civic leadership role on critical issues,
such as its endorsement of the successful
King County ballot measure Best Start for
Kids, which reflects the Foundation’s values
and commitment to creating equity and
opportunity for all residents of our com-
munities.
Another recent example just announced by
Seattle Foundation is the formation of the
Seattle Region Partnership, composed of top
regional leaders from business, government
and nonprofits. Together, they will work to
identify systems and structures to improve
middle-income job creation, retention, train-
ing and placement.
Lasting change is achieved when philan-
thropic investment is combined with smart
strategies and meaningful community
engagement. There are many ways Seattle
Foundation partners with philanthropists
and nonprofits to create lasting change in
our communities.
Giving to causes can make a tangible
impact in a community, and also yields
great satisfaction and pride. For additional
