This can lead to balance issues and raise the risk of falling, something that can have life-altering consequences among older patients, says Roraback-Carson.Many older people experience increased dizziness or unsteadiness on their feet. This combination can be lethal for older people, she says, for whom a fall can lead to a precipitous decline in overall health. There are ways to combat these changes, however, that provide both physical and cognitive benefits. Balance training, weight-shifting activities and multisensory training %u2014 using contrasting textures, a variety of sounds and physical activity at the same time to increase sensory integration %u2014 all improve proprioception. Some of the changes that come with age mirror what many neurodivergent people experience daily. Dr. Raima Amin, a neurologist at the UW Adult Autism Clinic, Changes in smell, taste and touchAbout a third of those over the age of 80 develop anosmia, a total or partial loss of smell. This condition can lead to a lower quality of life and a decline in the enjoyment of food. Olfactory training and aromatherapy can help improve the sense of smell. This decline can be an early sign of neurological disorders like Parkinson%u2019s disease.Changes in taste perception, like what London%u2019s neighbors experienced, can be addressed by using more flavorings in food to make it more palatable. Taste and smell become more important where getting adequate nutrition is concerned.ProprioceptionProprioception, or how you perceive where your body is in space (I%u2019m right-side up, for instance) can also change as we says some of the ways people on the spectrum manage sensory sensitivity could be useful to others. Clothing without labels or with labels removed, for instance, can be less irritating to the skin. Softer fabrics and weighted blankets and vests can improve proprioception, a trait often lacking in those on the autism spectrum. High contrast colors can help improve visual cues. Noise canceling headphones can reduce some of the disturbance caused in environments with a lot of ambient noise. Some of the proprioception treatments prescribed to autistic children could also be incorporated into multisensory training for older adults. One example is swinging or rocking in a chair.%u201cThe best thing you can do is stay on top of your physical health,%u201d Amin says. %u201cBe cognizant of changes and report them to your health care providers.%u201d Bestyears PHYSICAL HEALTHContinued from previous page AT SUNCADIAThe Uplands is a product of Suncadia AA1, LLC.
