LESSON 2: DEVELOPING TRUTH
The Thought
People are influenced by the times in which they live. As they experience the events around them, they identify how to be
safe and secure; identify where they can play a role and contribute to society; or even identitfy how they can affect social
change.. Bruce Lee was as much an influencer during his era as he was inspired by the events around him. Students
engaging in self-reflection, dialogue and role play will better understand the context of historical and contemporary
events by placing themselves into history itself.
Description
Students challenge themselves through role play to understand the effect Bruce Lee, as an historical figure, had on the
lives of everyday people. Students will analyze philosophical concepts of success, and how these shape a person’s view
of themselves and potentially transform their surroundings.
Objectives
1. Understand how individuals define their success.
2. Identify how influential people in history overcame or transformed obstacles.
3. Identify how both external and internal forces conceptions of race, nationality, ethnicity and culture affect an individual
and how they perceive their place in society.
Time Frame
Two class periods and a tour at Wing Luke Museum. The first activity consists of individual research and a small group
discussion. The second activity occurs at the museum. Students will be asked to be a part of a role play to try and
understand how four different people living during Bruce Lee’s time might have perceived his efforts.
(90-minute Bruce Lee Immersion Tour at Wing Luke Museum includes the second activity, a tour of the exhibition
and other dialogue activities.)

• Access to internet, library, television, encyclopedia and books
• A notepad and pen to take research notes
