GIVING
GUIDE
GiveBIG just keeps getting bigger. And it’s
all because of you.
Since Seattle Foundation established
GiveBIG six years ago, the annual day of
giving has raised $56 million for Greater
Seattle area nonprofits — making it one of
spring’s most widely anticipated events. Last
year alone, more than 39,000 individuals
throughout the region participated, invest-
ing $16.3 million for nonprofits support-
ing a wide range of community needs and
causes.
GiveBIG is just one part of Seattle Foun-
dation’s mission to invest in the future of
Greater Seattle. It’s an opportunity for the
community to come together and give gener-
ously to nonprofit organizations that make
our region a healthier and more vibrant
place to live.
Donations — both large and small — have
made significant impacts on participat-
ing nonprofits and the vital services they
provide throughout the region. Whether
it’s a mobile food bank that delivers fresh
foods to seniors, or an organization work-
ing locally to strengthen community schools
to help students reach their full potential,
or a grassroots organization making posi-
tive contributions by helping immigrants
and refugees integrate into their new home,
Greater Seattle thrives today because of the
incredible nonprofit organizations tirelessly
working toward making a meaningful and
lasting change in our community.
Participating nonprofits, such as the Pike
Place Market Foundation, know firsthand
the impact of GiveBIG.
“GiveBIG provides us with an amazing op-
portunity to rally a broader community and
make new friends,” says Patricia Gray, of Pike
Place Market Foundation. “This year we’re
looking to help fund the Market’s expan-
sion, and have high hopes people will ‘give
big to the pig’ (in reference to Market mascot
Rachel the Piggybank) through GiveBIG.”
This year, with the generous support from
community members, philanthropists and
businesses, GiveBIG aims to raise $20 million
for participating nonprofits. It’s a big day
with a big goal, and a big local impact.
“To help meet that goal, Seattle Foundation
is introducing several key platform changes
for this year’s event,” says Seattle Foundation
Vice President of Marketing and Communi-
cations Mary Grace Roske. “These changes
include bringing in the latest technology
available to support successful online giving
for nonprofit organizations and donors.
These changes will allow all donors to give
early, give easy and give smart while they
GiveBIG.”
GiveEARLY
Don’t want to wait until GiveBIG on Tues-
day, May 3? For the first time, GiveBIG dona-
tions can be scheduled in advance. Donors
can go to GiveBIG.seattlefoundation.org to
select their favorite nonprofits among eight
categories of Seattle Foundation’s Healthy
Community Framework — Basic Needs,
Health and Wellness, Neighborhoods and
Communities, Economy, Arts and Culture,
Education, Economy and Global Giving —
and target their dollars any time beginning
April 18.
GiveEASY
In addition, donating to multiple nonprof-
its at one time just got easier. Donors will
now be able to select as many organizations
as they choose in a single transaction. In the
past, donors had to make a separate dona-
tion to each chosen nonprofit. This year, each
nonprofit selected will be put in the donor’s
“Giving Cart.” Once each donation has been
selected, they can be paid all at once, making
it easier to support many organizations.
And now GiveBIG is mobile. With the new
mobile design and features included within
the GiveBIG website this year, donors will
find it much easier to contribute to their
nonprofits of choice — now just a smart-
phone or tablet away.
GiveSMART
Also for the first time, donors can elect to
cover payment of the processing fee for each
donation they make, ensuring the organi-
zations keep every dollar given. In similar
giving day events across the nation, approxi-
mately 40 percent of donors take advantage
of this feature and save the nonprofits the
expense of these fees. (Seattle Foundation
does not receive any fee or receive any share
of the donations made to nonprofits.)
In addition, businesses and individuals can
also contribute to a matching fund for their
favorite nonprofits — potentially tripling or
quadrupling a donation’s value for donors.

.seattlefoundation.org and view the match-
ing funds page.
“By offering the opportunity to give earlier,
easier and smarter, we believe the commu-
nity will ultimately give more. And together,
we will make an even stronger impact,” adds
Roske.
“GiveBIG
provides us with
an amazing
opportunity to
rally a broader
community.”
