1. What is the title of this chapter? What does it foreshadow about the story?

3. Who is the main character of the story?
Post-reading Questions:
1. The first sentence of chapter 13 reads, “Ben spent the next few days hovering between guilt, resentment and doubt.”
Why would Ben feel these things? Have you ever felt these feelings?
2. Find five new words introduced to you in this chapter and look up its definition. Does knowing the definition provide
any additional understanding of the story?
3. Why do you think the ringing phone creates alarm in Ben?
Activities:
1. Skim The Seattle Times’ headlines and find an article that you think sounds interesting. Read the article and circle all
words that you do not know. Write the words on a piece of paper and look up their meaning. In your own words, write
the meaning of the word on your piece of paper. Then, re-read the article. How did knowing the meaning of the words
help you understand the article?
2. Ben seems to be having a difficult time with his new home. Why do you think Ben is having such a hard time? With one
of your classmates discuss a time that you felt similar to Ben. How did you deal with those feelings? Was the result a good
one or not? After you and your peer discuss your experiences that are similar to Ben’s create an action plan for Ben on how
he can deal with his feelings without getting into trouble or hurt. How can you use these same ideas in your own life?
