1. The title of this chapter is “The Lashing Whip”. What picture comes to your mind with that title?
2. Chapter two ended with Ben afraid and a horse galloping towards him in the mist. What do you think the horse will do?
What will Ben do?
3. Look up the following words and define them in your own words, you will need them to understand this chapter:
sidling, adrenaline and eddies.
Post-reading questions:
1. Who did Ben meet outside the Brennan’s house?
2. Why was Ben embarrassed?
3. How did the boy on the horse make Ben feel? Have you ever encountered someone who made you feel that way?
How did you deal with it?
4. The stranger makes reference to fire and matches. Why does this upset Ben?
5. At the end of the chapter, Ben realizes that he never heard the horse leaving? What are some explanations for that?
Activities:
1. Make a list of all the new words introduced to you in this chapter. Next, select one and look up its definition.
Write a summary of the story, The Winner’s Circle using the new word. Try to use the new word while talking
with your friends or family.
2. Ben was afraid of being considered a “loser”. Look through today’s newspaper and locate an article about a successful
person. Read the article and then make a list of questions you would like to ask her/him about succeeding in life.
