4 CULTURALFOCUS Echoes of Aztlán and Beyond: Mexican American and Chicana/o Roots in the Northwest An annual tradition, Northwest Folklife’s Cultural Focus showcases a Northwest community throughout the year, and allows the Festival to connect more deeply with specific communities in the region. The Northwest Folklife Cultural Focus empowers artistic expressions and cultural traditions. Echoes of Aztlán and Beyond explores and celebrates Mexican American and Chicana/o communities from around the Pacific Northwest through stories, art, film, music, song, cuisine, dance, language and culture. The goal of this program is to showcase, preserve and recognize traditional and popular arts and culture in Mexican American and Chicana/o communities in our region. Join us throughout the year as we explore what it means to be Mexican and Chicana/o, starting with indigenous roots in America, and moving to immigration, the building of communities, and a vision of the future. Audiences will understand the history of the Mexican diaspora in a larger context of history and development of the region, as well as explore the vibrant art and culture celebrated in today’s communities. Today, more than ever, it’s important to share how communities evolve with the ever-changing societal and cultural shifts we face as a region. Over the past four years, our Cultural Focus committee, made up of individuals, professors, culture bearers, activists and local artists, became the consulting council to develop and curate Echoes of Aztlán and Beyond . This is their program. Ecos de Aztlán y más allá: Comunidades Mexicana/o-Americana/o y Chicana/o en el Noroeste El enfoque cultural del Northwest Folklife, tiene la tradición anual de comprometerse con una comunidad del Noroeste para exhibirla durante el año. Esta tradición le permite conectar más en profundidad con comunidades específicas de la región. El enfoque fortalece las expresiones artísticas y las tradiciones culturales. “Ecos de Aztlán y el más allá” explora y celebra comunidades Mexicana/o-Americana/o y Chicana/o del Noroeste Pacífico a través de historias, arte, cine, música, canciones, gastronomía, danza, idioma y cultura. El objetivo de este programa es presentar, preservar y reconocer las artes tradicionales y populares, y la cultura Mexicana/o- Americana/o y Chicana/o de las comunidades en nuestra región. Acompáñenos durante el año mientras descubrimos lo que significa ser Mexicana/o y Chicana/o, comenzando por las raíces indígenas en América y continuando con la inmigración, la creación de comunidades, y una visión del futuro. El público comprenderá la historia de la diáspora Mexicana a gran escala, el desarrollo de la región, y a la vez explorará el arte vibrante y la cultura celebrada en las comunidades actuales. Hoy más que nunca, es importante compartir cómo las comunidades evolucionan con los cambios sociales y culturales que enfrentamos como región. Durante los últimos 4 años, el Comité de Enfoque Cultural integrado por individuos, profesores, portadores de cultura, activistas y artistas locales, se convirtió en el Consejo que desarrolla y cura “Ecos de Aztlán y más allá” . Because Folklife is about all the cultures that are here in the Northwest. It’s about how folks live and express themselves in their own cultural traditions. What we’ll show you is also yours, because we’re all part of the same community. Hablamos de la juventud y qué tradiciones queremos que se mantengan vivas. También hablamos sobre lo importante que fue poder compartir esto con la gran ciudad de Seattle y la comunidad del Noroeste, y mostrarles lo que traemos a la mesa.
