2 R SUNDAY, MAY 12, 2019 | | Sports C11 College football Former Arizona coach Tomey dies at 80 Dick Tomey, the winningest foot- ball coach in University of Arizona history, died Friday night in Tucson. He was 80. Tomey was diagnosed with lung cancer in December. Tomey spent 14 seasons at Arizo- na, going 95-64 while taking the Wildcats to seven bowl games. Arizona went 12-1 in 1998 under Tomey and beat Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl to finish a program- best fourth in the Associated Press poll. He began his career as a coach at Hawaii in 1977 and closed it at San Jose State before retiring in 2009 at 71. Tomey was 183-145-7 overall in 20 years as a coach. Tomey was 63-46-3 at Hawaii before being hired to replace Larry Smith at Arizona in 1987. Tomey was 25-35 in five seasons at San Jose State. North Carolina coachMack Brown said on Twitter that college football lost a “true legend.” “I’ve never met a more passion- ate, lovingman, who was also one of the best coaches to ever coach,” he said. NFL Smith tells Jaguars fans to ‘stop going crazy’ Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith wants everyone to “stop going crazy” because he is stepping away from football for the 2019 season. Smith, the team’s leading tackler the last two years, on Saturday posted a video on Instagram in which he questioned the outrage over his decision. “Why is it so crazy I want to step away from the game?” Smith said. “Y’all just chill. Everything’s solid, you feel me? Stop going crazy. It’s getting aggravating. You feel me? Football ain’t everything. Y’all bet- ter wake the (expletive) up.” Those were Smith’s first public comments since announcing in a letter Thursday he is temporarily walking away from the game to “get my world in order.” Smith’s decision surprised the Jaguars and caused speculation about his health, his family and his future with the franchise. Smith is due tomake $9.75million this season but would receive nothing if he stays away. Tennis Nadal makes another exit in semifinal round For the third straight time this season, Rafael Nadal won’t be fight- ing for a title on his favorite surface. Nadal’s slump on clay continued at the Madrid Open with a third consecutive semifinal elimination, adding to his worst start to the clay- court swing since 2015. He lost 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to ninth- ranked Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, who will try to win his third title of the year in a final against top- ranked Novak Djokovic of Serbia, who defeated Dominic Thiemof Austria 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4) and will have a chance to tie Nadal for the most titles inMaster 1000 tourna- ments with 33. In the women’s final, Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands beat two-time Madrid champion Simona Halep of Romania 6-4, 6-4. As part of the celebration marking the re- turn of the Preakness, the colors of the race's winner were painted onto the or- namental weather vane at Pimlico Race- course for the first time. 1917 — Omar Khayyam, ridden by Charles Borel, becomes the first foreign- bred (England) colt to win the Kentucky Derby with a 2-length victory over Ticket. 1924 — Walter Hagen wins the PGA championship with a 2-up victory over Jim Barnes. 1970 — Ernie Banks hits his 500th career home run off Pat Jarvis in the Chicago Cubs' 4-3 victory over Atlanta at Wrigley Field. 1996 — A three-way dead heat is run at Yakima (Wash.) Meadows, the 20th such finish in thoroughbred racing history there. In the day's third race, a trio of $8,000 claimers _ Fly Like A Angel, Alli- haveonztheradio and Terri After Five _ hit the wire together after a one-mile race. 2006 — Laure Manaudou of France breaks Janet Evans' 18-year-old world re- cord in the 400-meter freestyle, finishing in 4:03.03 at the French national swim- ming championships. Manaudou beats the time of 4:03.85 set by Evans in win- ning the 400-meter freestyle at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. 2006 — Justin Gatlin breaks the 100-me- ter world record with a time of 9.76 sec- onds at the Qatar Grand Prix. A week lat- er, the International Association of Ath- letics Federations announces a timing error gave Gatlin a time of 9.76 seconds. His time of 9.766 seconds, should have been manually rounded up to 9.77, tying Asafa Powell's world mark of 9.77. 2010— Montreal follows up a monumen- tal upset by pulling off another. The Can- adiens, who eliminated the Washington Capitals, beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Montreal accomplishes what no team had done since the current play- offs format was adopted in 1994. And that is beat the Presidents' Trophy win- ner and defending Stanley Cup champion in successive rounds as an eighth-seeded team. 2010 — Kelly Kulick, the first woman to win a PBA Tour title when she beat the men in January in the Tournament of Champions, wins the U.S. Women's Open for her second women's major victory in 15 days. Kulick beats Liz Johnson of 233-203 in the final. 2013 — Serena Williams beats Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-4 in the final of the Ma- drid Open to retain her No. 1 ranking and collect her 50th career title. 2014 — LeBron James ties his playoff ca- reer high with 49 points, Chris Bosh makes the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 57 seconds left, and the Miami Heat beat the Brooklyn Nets 102-96 for a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
