Folklife Festiva - May 25-28, 2018
9 CO-CURATED, CO-CREATED Community Coordinators are an integral part of Northwest Folklife’s mission and vision to celebrate, share, and participate in the evolving traditions of the Pacific Northwest. Throughout the year, Northwest Folklife and Community Coordinators work in partnership to co- curate programs and collaborate to present the diversity of cultures and traditions of the region. As culture bearers, leaders, and representatives of their communities, Community Coordinators present their voices and traditions on their own terms and ensure an authentic experience to multi-cultural arts. “Community Coordinators are the lifeblood of all Northwest Folklife programs, and these relationships are at the heart and soul of the organization,” says Northwest Folklife Executive Artistic Director Kelli Faryar. “Our collaboration with Coordinators defines our commitment to cultural inclusion.” More than 100 Community Coordinators work closely with staff to program all of Northwest Folklife programs including the Cultural Focus, the Our Big Neighborhood youth and family program, and the annual Northwest Folklife Festival. Northwest Folklife also involves other festivals in the Community Coordinator program. For example, Carl Copeland of Festival Sundiata has been programming a soul and R&B showcase on the Mural Amphitheatre. “There’s not enough venues in Seattle for black music,” says Copeland. “Folklife covers almost every aspect of life you can think of. I love seeing all the families. There’s no color barriers at Folklife, everybody’s down there. It shows the typical make-up of Seattle; everybody is well represented at that festival.”Catch the Festival Sundiata showcase on Saturday evening on the Mural Amphitheatre.
