All weekend, this area of the Folklife Festival buzzes with sights, sounds and arts just for kids. Each organization listed below brings its vision to the space, lending its perspective and craft to help you to explore your own backyard. Gage Academy of Art: “Color Me Seattle” The Gage Academy offers a chance to observe Seattle through color and form! Elementary artists can practice their craft just like the professionals. Gage Academy will provide art supplies, coloring pages, patch making and interactive encouragement so kids can go out and visually explore Seattle Center. Chimp Sanctuary Northwest: “98% Chimp” (Saturday/Sunday only) Learn about the culture of our closest primate relatives, the chimpanzees! CSNW is a sanctuary in central Washington that provides shelter and enrichment to chimpanzees victimized by scientific testing. Try your hand at using tools like our closest living relatives, and discover the story of the apes that call Cle Elum, Washington, home. Kids can also learn how to “pant- hoot” like a chimpanzee, and discover how to make the world a kinder place for all creatures. Vedic Cultural Center: “Vedic Vibes & Virtues” Mix your own spice blends, weave a small basket or get your fortune told through palm reading! The Vedic Cultural Center brings an exploration of South Asian traditions to the Discovery Zone through hands-on creation and activity. Kids will get a glimpse of life on the other side of the world and in their own neighborhood. Northwest African American Museum: “My Family’s Journey to the Northwest” Join the Northwest African American Museum for collage making! Collage your family’s history by creating a greeting card you can give to a loved one or treasure as a keepsake to remember your family’s journey throughout the Northwest. Dia De Muertos Festival: Make Paper Flowers (Saturday only) Discover the history and significance of the Dia de Muertos holiday through art making with the Dia de Muertos Festival. Learn about the importance of the Marigold flower during the holiday by making your own elaborate paper flowers. Center for Wooden Boats: “Toy Boat Building” What a dream for a kid to build their own wooden boat! With the help of CFWB volunteers, children can design a boat and work toward crafting their vision. Follow the Family Friendly icon through the schedule on pages 12–19, for ongoing family fun on the Discovery Zone Stage and throughout the Festival, including the Kindiependent Showcase on Monday at 11 AM on the Fountain Lawn Stage.
