TREEFORT MUSIC FEST CURATES ITS FIRST INDIE ROOTS SHOWCASE INTERVIEWWITH FESTIVAL DIRECTOR AND TALENT BUYER, ERIC GILBERT For those who don’t know, what is Treefort all about? Treefort Music Fest is a five-day multi-venue music and culture festival held in downtown Boise, Idaho. It is driven by and supported by a vibrant community in Boise — what we like to think of as the eastern edge of the Northwest frontier. Our connection to the Northwest Folklife Festival is one of common vision. Much like our elders at Northwest Folklife, our mission is to help build community through arts and culture. Our passion also lies with connecting regional, national, and international music scenes through convening. What bands will Festival-goers get to enjoy during Folklife showcase? Karl Blau is a fixture in the DIY music culture of the Northwest and truly embodies the root of a festival like Folklife — music of the people, by the people. Rabbit Wilde played Treefort for the first time this year. They’re from Bellingham and are a super talented folk rock/ pop quartet with bluegrass pickin’ chops. Hillfolk Noir is a band that to me embodies the nuts and bolts definition of folk music better than most artists I know. It was really important to us to have an Idaho artist in this showcase and I truly can’t think of a better representation for this particular festival as musicians but also as people. Can you describe how Treefort’s uniqueness will shine through this showcase at the Northwest Folklife Festival? I think Hillfolk Noir with their twist on “folk” music will help represent the uniqueness of Treefort and the Boise music scene fairly well on their own. Then having a more traditional take on folk rock with Rabbit Wilde mixed with the DIY / folk punk roots of Karl Blau singing classic country tunes covers some decent ground considering that these are just three artists to represent the spirit of Treefort — a festival that just hosted 450+ bands from all over the world and the genre spectrum. In the end, like Folklife, Treefort is focused on community first and foremost and all three of these artists are rooted in that as much as they are their art, which makes them all a great fit for this showcase.
