8 DISCOVERY ZONE : THE FAMILY-FRIENDLY HOT SPOT n Little Wing and Rookies presented by School of Rock “Instrument Play & Presentations” Come strum an electric guitar or play a snare drum! Little Wing is an innovative early- childhood music-education program.At the Festival, kids will have chance to play different drums, pick up a guitar and strum it or sing into a microphone. n Seattle Children’s Museum “Exploring Rhythm” Explore rhythm with Seattle Children’s Museum.Test out instruments from around the world and make a dancing ring to dance to the music you hear at Folklife. n Center for Wooden Boats “Toy Boat Building” Use hand drills, hammers, and art supplies to build Location & Hours Next 50 Plaza (Map #22) 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Friday–Monday Kids! Bring your parents to the Northwest Folklife Festival’s exploration hot spot — the Discovery Zone! Packed with performances, workshops and hands-on activities for young people, the Discovery Zone is a young person’s gateway to learning something new. Take a peek at some of the programming you’ll enjoy at this year’s Festival below. (Map #22) wooden toy boats! The aim is to provide a fun, hands-on activity and an opportunity for children to be creative and gain familiarity with traditional hand tools. n Active Arts and Sciences “Make Your Own Mosaic Tile” Work with recycled art glass to make mosaic tiles.With a little bit of guidance, kids will learn technique, a bit about color balance, get creative and have a lot of fun. n The Creative Advantage Stop by and learn the importance of art in education. The Seattle Children’s Festival on Oct. 11 provides families with entertainment, activities and a fun multi-cultural experience. Save the date! Please note that some activities have a suggested activity fee to cover material costs. Highwire, Inc. n Artists at Play Sound turns to motion, and motion to play in an imaginative, artist-created outdoor area called Artists at Play.This area takes child-friendly amusement to new heights - and this new, permanent Seattle Center feature opens Friday at the Northwest Folklife Festival! Explore the 35-foot Climbing Tower, walk the colorful Labyrinth and take a spin on the ADA-accessible Integrated Carousel.You’ll find child-inspired musical instruments, listening stations and “story waves.” Realized through a public-private partnership and designed by the team of Trimpin, Judith Caldwell, SiteWorkshop and Highwire, Artists at Play encompasses tall play, artful play, inspired play, sound play and play for all! NEW THIS YEAR KINDIEPENDENT SHOWCASE All your favorite kindie rockers will be at the Festival Monday from 11 a.m. –3 p.m, on the Fountain Lawn Stage. Come rock out!
