GiveBig2020

SUNDAY, APRIL 26, 2020 | Special Advertising Section 1 R 2 Claire: As is the case for people and businesses, virtually every nonprofit has been severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The eco- nomic effects are just beginning to be felt but are expected to be longlast- ing. This is a time when the need to give is bigger than ever. Scott: Giving is so much more than a financial transaction. Giving can transform a community and change lives forever. Giving allows us to empathize with the struggles of our fellow human beings and encourages us to use our compassion to make tangible differences. Nonprofits help address problems and fill gaps in the community. They are often charac- terized by passion, purpose, self- sacrifice and urgency, yet are reliant on compassionate and discerning donors like yourself to do their important work. Claire: Serving on the advisory council really brings home my awareness of all that nonprofits do for each of us. Every person in Washington benefits from dozens of nonprofits each year. Nonprofits maintain public places, trails, parks and waterways. They enrich our lives with art and music. They provide us with opportunities to learn and dialogue with each other, which leads us to broaden our perspective. They organize the resources to provide for the basic needs of our neighbors. They step in to intervene when a per- son is at risk and needs protection. They provide professional expertise to help us meet big challenges, like the ones we are facing today. Scott: Explore the many wonder- ful nonprofits described on the GiveBIG website. We encourage you not only to give to organizations you know but also to discover and support other incredible nonprofits. Take this opportunity to invest in our amazing community by giving generously. Join us onMay 5–6 at GiveBIGWA.org. Claire Catania is a self-described bird- nerd. She is the executive director of Seattle Audubon, which leads a local community in appreciating, understanding and protect- ing birds and their natural habitats. Scott Chin is the president of Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, a Christian min- istry that loves and cares for our homeless neighbors by meeting urgent physical needs and offering long-term recovery pro- grams that address root causes and break the cycle of homelessness. As the past few months have demonstrated, we rise or fall together. How we live our lives — the choices we make — can benefit or harm others, including the people we care about most. This connection is at the heart of the nonprofit sector. The lesson pub- lic health professionals have been emphasizing is, “We depend on each other.” That message is deep in the bones of nonprofits. We all benefit when art is created, illnesses are cured, and children are learning. And all of our lives are made less secure by not only lethal viruses but income inequality, rac- ism and environmental degradation. At 501 Commons, we provide ser- vices to more than 1,000 nonprofits each year, training to 1,100 staff and volunteer leaders, and support to 1,500 organizations participating in GiveBIG. This gives us a front-row seat to the amazing diversity of Washington’s nonprofits. Their missions include providing food, shelter, health and social services; fighting for a more just world; expanding our horizons through art, music and learning; and more. GiveBIG participating organizations are resilient, but all are facing uncer- tainty. They know how to pinch pen- nies and solve hard problems, but these are unprecedented times. Some nonprofits are in the epicenter of the virus. Others have missions directly focused on the economic hardship that COVID-19 is causing. Due to the devastating impact of the virus on Washington’s nonprofits, this year GiveBIG will become a two-day giving event on May 5–6. GiveBIG Washington is partner- ing with #GivingTuesday, a global generosity movement, to enhance fundraising efforts for Washington’s nonprofits in early May in response to COVID-19 impacts. You can visit GiveBIGWA.org to view organizations’ profiles; some are promoting an online event where you can learn more about them, while others have supporters raising money through a FUNdrais- ing page. You can make an early donation now or participate in the culmination of the campaign on May 5–6. Payment can be made by credit card or echeck, or you can indicate a pledge to be fulfilled by your donor-advised fund or IRA Charitable Trust. Nonprofits make life better for all of us. In times like these, even more lives depend on them. Please donate — and encourage your friends, fam- ily and colleagues to join you. Give to your favorite organization — and discover a new cause!
