Let’s talk about suicide. Washington’s rate of suicide is about 11% higher than the national rate, according to the Washington State Department of Health, with around 15 deaths by suicide for every 100,000 people. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth between the ages 10-24, and thousands are impacted by suicide loss every day. It’s time to do something. Mental Health Awareness Month is coming up in May, but the need for mental health care doesn’t stop there. Community organizations like Crisis Clinic work to spread a message of mental wellness that continues beyond the month of May through a variety of programs and services. Receiving over 260,000 calls last year, Crisis Clinic also aims to erase stigma that prevents people from getting access to much-needed care. When someone doesn’t have access to housing, when someone is experiencing a substance use disorder, when someone is on their journey of recovery, and even when someone just needs some emotional support from a peer, it’s important that resources, support, and training are available to help people care for themselves and their loved ones. Organizations like Crisis Clinic empower people to take that next step toward positive change and to keep talking about mental health challenges and mental wellness. Only when we take these steps as a community will we see our rates of suicide decline. Volunteers and staff at Crisis Clinic invest their time and energy to be there for those in need. “After a four-hour shift, I always leave feeling like my being there made a dif- ference in someone’s life,” states one of the many volunteers with the 24-Hour Crisis Line. With over 60 hours of training each, and many with lived experiences, they make a huge difference in the lives of others.
